Bouncer Tony Vallelonga becomes a driver and bodyguard for an African American classical pianist, Don Shirley as he tours around the American south in the 1960’s. Challenged by the realities of racial segregation, and despite the cultural differences between the two, they become friends and allies in sometimes hostile territory.
Named for the Negro Motorist Green Book that was distributed to African American travelers between 1936-1966, the film maps an America prior to the Civil Rights movement at the height of segregation. Starring Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, House of Cards) and Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings, The Road) and directed by Peter Ferrelly (Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary), the film is inspired by a true friendship in divisive times.
